Terpenes are the aromatic compounds found in the essential oils of plants and flowers. Their use is steeped in Ancient traditions where they were commonly used in religious rituals and ceremonies. In recent years, we have seen a re-emergence in using terpenes for symptom control and over all health and wellbeing.
Terpenes not only give each cannabis cultivar its unique smell, they also act in synergy with cannabinoids to enhance or dampen the effects of various cannabinoids in a process referred to as “the entourage effect”.
What is A-pinene?
Alpha-pinene is one of the most abundant terpenes found in nature. Pinene is also found in pine needles and is responsible for the clean, uplifting aroma that can be experienced while wandering through a field of fresh pine trees. This earthy scent can also found in a certain cannabis cultivar profiles.
Other Sources of Pinene found in Nature.
Pinene is also found in a variety of fresh herbs such as: rosemary, dill, parsley and some citrus varietals, like lime and lemon peel.
A-pinene interacts with:
- CBD to block inflammation and stimulate antibiotic properties.
- CBD and THC as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, aiding memory.
- THC promoting bronchodilatory effects in humans and increases alertness. Alpha-pinene can also counteract THC induced anxiety.
What does the research say?
Alpha-pinene has been shown to possess powerful anti-inflammatory effects, which could have an impact on diseases like arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. Studies suggest that due to its effects as a bronchodilator, it could be helpful in managing symptoms related to bronchitis, asthma and even COPD.
Pinene also exhibits a broad spectrum of antibiotic properties, which could be useful in preventing MRSA. Additionally, because of its ability to enhance memory function, researchers are studying its applications in the prevention and treatment of neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Interestingly, pinene is unattractive to insects, highlighting its potential insect repelling benefits.
Pinene rich cannabis cultivars:
- Jack Herer: known for boosting focus, mood, and appetite.
- Blue Dream: promoting a mellow euphoric effect with a spark of creative energy.
- OG Kush: stimulating relaxation with a gentle mood enhancement.
- Pinene can also be found in “Dutch Treat”, “White Buffalo” and “Strawberry Cough” varietals.
In a nutshell:
Pinene acts as an anti-inflammatory, promotes pain relief & relaxation, aids in memory and respiratory function and may hold the potential to reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses.
